Comfort or Perception?

SciWorks Radio is a production of 88.5 WFDD and SciWorks, the Science Center and Environmental Park of Forsyth County, located in Winston-Salem.

Were you comfortable the last time you flew on an airplane? I bet you can answer that question easily. Now, have you ever climbed Pilot Mountain and sat on a rock to rest or have a picnic lunch? Do you remember how comfortable that rock was?

The Anti-Vaccination Problem

SciWorks Radio is a production of 88.5 WFDD and SciWorks, the Science Center and Environmental Park of Forsyth County, located in Winston-Salem.

Vaccination may be one of our greatest medical success stories. For example, according to the centers for disease control, in the late 1940s through the 1950s the US had about 35 thousand cases of polio, a potentially deadly disease. A vaccine was introduced in 1955 and by 1965 only 61 cases were reported.

Rosetta Space Probe Explores the Origins of the Solar System

SciWorks Radio is a production of 88.5 WFDD and SciWorks, the Science Center and Environmental Park of Forsyth County, located in Winston-Salem.

On August 6th of this year the European Space Agency completed a 10 year journey of the space probe Rosetta to the object designated Comet 67P. While several cometary flybys and missions have been completed in the past, Rosetta will accomplish a series of firsts, according to the European Space Agency. It is the first spacecraft to orbit a comet, and as such it will be the first to accompany a comet as it journeys to the inner solar system. It will be the first to see up close the transformation of a comet as it approaches the sun. Rosetta will place a robotic lander on the surface in the first-ever controlled landing on a comet. The images produced will be the first ever taken from the surface of a comet.

13 Year Old Invents To Save Lives

SciWorks Radio is a production of 88.5 WFDD and SciWorks, the Science Center and Environmental Park of Forsyth County, located in Winston-Salem.

Right in front of you is an invention. Your desk, the computer, your watch, the plate your breakfast is sitting on. The radio you're listening to right now. Even the most basic items around us were invented. Though no one ponders the inception of the door knob when entering a room, we do tend to celebrate the giants who gave us things like light bulbs or mechanized automobile production. Necessity really is the mother of invention, and sometimes that need is a means to keep your coffee warm. Other times the need to save lives. That's where Chase Lewis from Raleigh, North Carolina, comes in. At age 13 he invented potentially life-saving technology, earning prizes and patents along the way.

Paul Kortenaar Celebrates SciWorks' 50th Anniversary

SciWorks, the science and environmental park of Forsyth county, is a scientific museum in the city of Winston-Salem. This year, SciWorks will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. Recently, WFDD Radio Camper Lauren James interviewed Paul Kortenaar, the Executive Director at SciWorks.

I had the opportunity to sit down with Mr. Kortenaar and speak with him about the museum. Initially, I was a bit intimidated by Paul. At a height far above five feet, he towered over me, but over the course of our interview, Paul revealed to be a gentle giant who was very passionate about his job.

We often think of different scientific disciplines as existing in isolation from one another, but in reality they are interconnected. For example, Astronomy is the study of space and the objects within. These objects are made from atoms, and can be investigated though chemistry. They follow the laws of Physics. Earth is one of those objects. Earth's biologic organisms evolved and are influenced by the various expressions of geology, and life has altered the geology of the Earth.
