Radio Camp 2021 - Virtual and In-Person

WFDD Event
Monday, June 21, 2021 - 8:00am to Friday, August 6, 2021 - 12:00am

Radio Camp is back!

Radio Camp is the perfect program for any middle schooler (or even a high school student) that just can’t stop asking questions. At Radio Camp you’ll learn how to conduct interviews using your phone and how to turn those interviews into a great-sounding feature story that might air on Saturday mornings on 88.5 WFDD!

In the process, you’ll learn how to use audio-editing software, how to write a script, how to make your interviewee sound like a chipmunk and even how to create your own fake sounds for movies and tv. Yeah, it’s not all work…we have tons of fun pushing the boundaries of what we can do with audio.

This summer we’re offering different versions of Radio Camp, so read up and choose the one that better fits your needs:

Following State and Local guidelines, we’ve determined that we’ll be able to offer an in-person version of Radio Camp this summer.

This is how in-person Radio Camp works:

We will meet every day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at HanesBrand theater in downtown Winston-Salem. Each day, students will learn a different aspect of the audio production process. They will also have the chance to interview a member of the community and then produce a story based on that interview. All interviews are done remotely as to reduce exposure.

At the end of the week, parents/guardians are invited to come in and listen to the stories the kids produced.

This summer we will have two sessions of in-person Radio Camp:

  • Session 1: July 19th - July 23rd

  • Session 2: July 26th - July 30th

Radio Camp is aimed at middle school students. If your child is a rising middle-schooler or just graduated from middle school, they can still participate.

The fee for in-person Radio Camp is $200

This summer, you can still get all the fun of Radio Camp, without having to worry about what you’ll wear or what time you need to be up. That’s right, this summer, Radio Camp is also available in virtual form and better than ever.

This is how virtual Radio Camp works:

Every day, for five days, we will post a new video lesson and an activity (or two). You will then have the entire day to work on it and, in order to get credit, you’ll need to submit your final work before midnight. You will then have an entire week to work on and submit your final project: A 3-minute fully produced audio story. If your story is good, it’ll air on 88.5 WFDD!

In order to get to know you better and so you have a chance to meet other campers, we will have optional Zoom meetings on Tuesday and Thursday of your camp week at 10 a.m. to do some fun audio-related activities.

Our Virtual Radio Camp will officially launch on June 2021, and we’ll have new sessions starting on:

  • June 21st

  • July 12th

  • July 26th

  • August 2nd

Absolutely any middle school (and high school) student who wants to participate, can . . . no matter where they are in the United States (or the world)! We are however capping the amount of people per session in order to ensure we can give every participant the attention they require.

The price for Virtual Radio Camp is $125.

If you are currently facing financial hardship and you’d still like to participate, we encourage you to apply for our Radio Camp scholarship.
