A temporary exhibit at Blandwood Museum will feature twelve pieces of Thomas Day crafted furniture to enliven narratives of race, gender, and class.
Thomas Day was a free man of color who lived in mid-19th century North Carolina. His career as a cabinetmaker and architect included the design and crafting of unique and beautiful pieces of furniture from his factory in Milton, NC, just 45 miles northeast of Greensboro. The son of an artisan craftsman from Virginia, Day became one of the finest furniture and architectural designers in the South. Day was of mixed-race heritage and moved within social circles that included politicians, academics, and planters. He owned one of the largest furniture businesses in the state, and his commissions are on display at numerous museums including the Union Tavern in Milton, the North Carolina Museum of History, the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
This summer, pieces may be seen at the Blandwood Museum in Greensboro.
The exhibit, entitled New Perspectives on Thomas Day – Pairing Furniture by North Carolina’s Free Black Master Craftsman with Contemporary Pieces from Governor Morehead’s Blandwood, will prompt dialogue about this eminent free Black woodworker known for his distinctive furniture and architectural woodwork. Displayed alongside contemporary furniture once owned by Governor John Motley Morehead, the exhibition will contextualize Day’s furniture in period rooms and introduce new approaches to understanding the work of this master craftsman as a successful Black entrepreneur operating within elite white social circles.
A National Historic Landmark, Blandwood operates as a traditional house museum to interpret historical narratives related to North Carolina history, architecture, and the decorative arts. This exhibit works to expand the traditional narratives around race, gender, and class in mid-nineteenth century North Carolina.
This exhibit will be open from April 1 through September 30, Tuesdays – Saturdays 11am-4pm & Sundays 2pm – 5pm with the exception of major national holidays. The last tour begins one hour prior to closing. Tickets are $8 at the door.
