South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster issued a coronavirus mandate preventing schools and local governments from creating mask mandates and requiring proof of vaccination.
South Carolina is one of about two dozen states that have few or no statewide LGBTQ protections. The federal Equality Act would change that, but some in the state say the bill goes too far.
"Today, abortion remains safe and legal in South Carolina, and politicians' plan to restrict access to health care has failed," the region's Planned Parenthood president said following the decision.
The Republican governor's office said he is "experiencing mild symptoms with a cough and slight fatigue." McMaster's wife also contracted the virus but his office said she is asymptomatic.
