George Floyd protests

Researchers say police should not be using tear gas or pepper spray against protesters. They make people cough droplets and damage the body in ways that could make people sicker from COVID-19.

The rule requires police to act to prevent officers from using excessive force. The order comes after widespread outrage over the killing of George Floyd while being restrained by Minneapolis Police.

The measure bars police and other public authorities from discriminating against anyone based on factors including skin color, religion, disabilities, worldview, age and sexual identity.

As protests continue around the country in response to several high-profile deaths of African Americans in recent weeks, black people say they are frustrated, fearful and fatigued.

Demonstrators this week said they were rallying for "our brother" in the U.S. as well as Adama Traoré, who died in police custody in 2016.

The Rev. Al Sharpton gave the eulogy at Thursday's memorial for George Floyd in Minneapolis. Floyd, 46, died in police custody on May 25.

Unlike the demonstrations that rocked the city five years ago after Freddie Gray, 25, died in police custody, this week's unfolded peacefully. Local activists are helping to avoid unplanned violence.

Mostly peaceful demonstrations in the city on Saturday and Sunday gave way to unrest after nightfall in response to the death of George Floyd.
