WSFC Schools Seek Help Covering Relocation Costs

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School officials are looking for help to pay for the rising costs associated with possible toxic contamination in the Hanes and Lowrance middle schools. The district is turning to the company that owns the property for financial assistance.

School officials decided last week to protect students from the potential threat of toxic vapors by closing the two middle schools. But the costs related to relocation, air sample testing and lawyers fees are mounting.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports the cost of the move alone could cost taxpayers close to $3 million dollars over the next two years.

A lawyer for the school system says officials plan to ask Kaba Ilco Corp. to help cover costs incurred so far. Kaba is the owner of the property where the toxic contamination has spread.

The company told the paper that it has already invested significant resources to address the issues, but wouldn't respond to questions about future financial assistance.
