The design for a new Ashley Elementary was approved in March. Now, it needs to be translated into construction documents which will allow the district to put the project out for bid.
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction released school performance grades this week. Nine Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools moved up a letter grade including Cook Literacy Model School, which used to be classified as one of the lowest-performing schools in the state.
The district currently has 17 different bell schedules for elementary, middle and high schools. Start and end times can vary by as much as an hour, even within the same grade span.
The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office is calling for metal detectors to be used in schools every day after a gun was found on campus this week. But district officials say that will require more funding and manpower than they currently have.
A student was found with a firearm and live ammunition at Carver High School in Winston-Salem on Monday, according to a media release from the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office. Officials say the handgun was never displayed, and no one at the school was hurt or threatened.
Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools has fewer employee vacancies overall so far this year compared to last. But officials are concerned about the level of staffing needs in the exceptional children department.
