Duke Energy plans to invest $500 million in solar energy. These projects were approved Monday by the North Carolina Utilities Commission.

The plans call for the Charlotte-based utility to build three solar-generating facilities and to purchase power from five other new solar projects.

Duke said Monday this will help the nation's largest electric company meet its 2015 state requirement for renewable energy. Senior vice president Rob Caldwell says the projects will help provide cost-effective renewable energy to customers.

The solar generating facilities are in Duplin, Bladen and Wilson counties in the eastern part of the state. The company says the projects will be completed by the end of next year.
