Guilford County officials have released details of a proposed $855 million budget for fiscal year 2023.

Guilford County Manager Michael Halford presented his recommended budget to the Board of County Commissioners on Thursday.

The proposal expands investments to support the operating and capital needs of Guilford County Public Schools and Guilford Technical Community College. A $50 million increase for future education capital needs is based on a bond referendum approved by voters this week.

Halford says that beyond fulfilling a responsibility to education funding, his proposal addresses the maintenance of service demands and staffing requirements.

"Get caseloads back to where they need to be, make sure we're meeting various standards, whether they're state standards or recommendations, professional standards in things like social services, some of our health functions or inspections, things like that," says Halford.

While the property tax rate would remain the same, the county would move from a five-year to a four-year reappraisal cycle.

Commissioners have tentatively scheduled several public work sessions to discuss the budget and will hold a public hearing on June 2.
