Portions of Guilford and Alamance counties are now experiencing exceptional drought, the most severe category recognized by the U.S. Drought Monitor.

The grant application period for the program will launch on July 15. It will initially open to residents ages 65 or older and will expand to all eligible applicants on August 16.

Guilford County officials say the center served more than 20,000 individuals last year alone.

Guilford County leaders are proposing the county’s lowest property tax rate in more than 20 years. But because property values have jumped so much, many homeowners would still see higher tax bills under the plan.

So far this cycle, there have been nearly 12,000 property value appeals. That's more than twice the number during the last revaluation period in 2022.

The County’s infant mortality rate is higher than the state and national averages at 9.2 deaths for every 1,000 live births.

The change comes as the county continues to experience significant growth.
