Greensboro Police Department to hire civilian traffic investigators

Greensboro Police Department is recruiting civilians to investigate certain traffic accidents. 

The department is hiring five people to perform non-emergency traffic safety roles, like assisting stranded motorists, directing traffic, and investigating property damage-only crashes. They won’t be allowed to issue citations. 

Candidates selected for the new roles will be required to take part in at least four weeks of field training with experienced officers. They will also complete a crash investigation training course designed by the North Carolina Justice Academy. 

The new positions are the result of House Bill 140, which allowed cities to hire civilian personnel to investigate traffic accidents. The bill was signed by Governor Roy Cooper in June and praised by both Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughn and Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines. 

The deadline to apply for the new positions is November 3.
