A new Arizona law targets cities that pass laws state lawmakers deem to be in violation of state law by cutting off their funds. It's the latest escalation in a long-running conflict between rural and urban areas.

North Carolina's Legislature Poised To Repeal 'Bathroom Bill'

House Bill 2 was passed in response to an anti-discrimination measure in Charlotte. Now the city has voted to rescind the measure, and state legislators say there will be a vote to repeal HB2.

Jefferson County School District, north of Birmingham, Ala., has a student poverty rate of 22 percent. If the city of Gardendale secedes from the county district, it will become an "island" district within Jefferson County.
