The Winston-Salem City Council approved a new policy Monday night establishing free bus service during extreme weather conditions.

It’s a change that housing and environmental advocates have been calling for since June.

The new policy defines “extreme heat” as temperatures at or above 95 degrees, and a heat index at or above 100.

It also includes “extreme cold,” which is qualified as four consecutive hours where the wind chill is at or below 20 degrees.

City leaders will also be allowed to temporarily waive or reduce bus fare for special events.
