Winston-Salem is launching a new public art project called "City of Arts in Bloom," inspired by the symbolism of the dandelion: renewal, persistence, and beauty.

This year, the city and several community partners will build on the theme with hands-on programs and workshops.

That includes a series of dandelion-inspired sculptures by local artists set to be unveiled in May and June, Public Art Project Planner Erica Palmiter says.

"Lining Salem Parkway, there will be one close to the baseball stadium," she says. "That one will be the 40-foot dandelion puff. And then there will be two bouquets on the Church Street Bridge. So, from the yellow flower to then the dandelion puff, you see the full cycle of its potential and its change."

The official kickoff for the programming will take place at Piedmont Environmental Alliance’s 21st annual Piedmont Earth Day Fair on April 18.
