The storm is expected to continue toward China after crossing over Taiwan. Authorities in the Chinese city of Shantou in Guangdong province are advising residents to take precautions.

A powerful typhoon shifted and abruptly gained strength Sunday as it blew closer to the northeastern Philippines, prompting evacuations from high-risk villages and the capital.

Goni is the most powerful storm so far this year. Evacuations were issued as the typhoon was set make landfall on the country's largest island.

The typhoon, which has now passed to the northeast of Tokyo, was the largest to hit Japan in 61 years, since the 1958 Kanogawa Typhoon that killed more than 1,200 people.

The storm killed at least three people in South Korea and caused widespread power outages.

At least 33 people have been killed and several remain missing. The storm prompted the evacuation of more than a million residents from China's coast and caused hundreds of homes to collapse.

The storm, currently categorized as a super typhoon with sustained winds of 130 mph, is expected to make landfall near the city of Ningbo early Saturday.

Less than a month after a powerful storm killed 11 people in northern Japan, another typhoon slammed the country, resulting in two deaths and widespread destruction.

The storm is quickly approaching Hong Kong, where officials have warned residents to take shelter. Forecasts predict that the storm will weaken over land.

Officials and residents raced to prepare as the storm approached the northern part of the country. In 2013 typhoon Haiyan killed more than 6,000 people in the Philippines.
