Cyprus "is committed to taking care of all travelers who test positive during their stay, as well as their families and close contacts," the government says.

"We are facing so many situations of disasters. We badly need a symbol of hope. I strongly believe Cyprus can be the symbol of hope at the beginning of 2017," the U.N. Secretary-General said.

Says one activist: "They tell us, 'Because of you, we are breathing free air.' "

The hijack suspect, identified as Egyptian national Seif Eldin Mustafa, will be held by police for eight days in Cyprus. And a British man explains why he wanted a photo of himself with the suspect.

Cypriot officials describe the suspected hijacker as "unstable." They say he wanted to speak to his Cyprus-based ex-wife, and later requested political asylum. All passengers and crew were released.
