Winston-Salem city officials are inviting the public to the unveiling of its new Walk of Fame. The Memorial Walk of Fame honors deceased residents who made contributions in the arts, entertainment, and culture of the city.

The inaugural group of 11 inductees includes the recording group The “5” Royales, arts patron Phil Hanes, and Larry Leon Hamlin, an actor, director, and founder of the National Black Theatre Festival.

Winton-Salem accepts nominations for the Walk of Fame once a year. A committee then recommends honorees to the mayor and city council.

To be eligible, honorees must have lived in the city for five years and made significant contributions to the community.

Inductees are recognized with a brass medallion embedded in the sidewalk outside the Benton Convention Center downtown. 

An unveiling for the first class of honorees will be held 9 a.m. Friday at the convention center on Fifth Street.
