Winston-Salem officials have approved a rezoning resolution that would open up some land for affordable housing.

Winston-Salem City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to rezone the property, which sits off of Northwest Boulevard. The 4.3 acres of land are currently undeveloped.

Council Member D.D. Adams said that with Northwest Boulevard acting as a major east-west corridor, the ultimate goal is to provide affordable housing for different pockets of the community.

"My hope is that we will upgrade and do an area plan for the Northwest Boulevard corridor to improve its livability and its appearance throughout the city," said Adams.

Discussion on rezoning the land began over a year ago.

According to the Winston-Salem Journal, City Manager Lee Garrity says the next step will involve finding a developer to come up with a plan for affordable housing on the site.
