A North Carolina Senator is standing behind U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions despite critical comments from the president.

In an interview with the New York Times, President Trump said he wouldn't have picked him for attorney general had he known Sessions would recuse himself from the Russian investigation. On Twitter, he's called him “beleaguered.”

The comments sparked some backlash, even among some of Trump's supporters.

Now North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis has stepped up to defend the attorney general. In a statement, Tillis praises his fellow Republican for his commitment to the rule of law. As for Sessions' recusal on Russia, Tillis says it was a good move to avoid the appearance of potential conflict. He adds that it was the right thing for the Department of Justice and the country.

Tillis worked with Sessions when the attorney general was still in the Senate. Tillis is also a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
