The Avett Brothers TDC Video

Earlier this week, we were happy to share the news that The Avett Brothers have a new album, called True Sadness, coming out in June. This will be the group's ninth album, and just one of many that we have loved talking about and listening to here at All Songs.

To celebrate the Avetts' new work, we wanted to take you back to 2009. The group was a few months away from releasing its sixth album I and Love and You when it stopped by the Tiny Desk. The series was still in its infancy then — we had put out only a few dozen or so — but the Avetts' three song set was an indication of just how special the Tiny Desk concerts would become.

One of those songs was "Down With The Shine," a song that the Avetts had only just begun to play live and would not release until The Carpenter in 2012. The energy and intimacy of the The Avett Brothers' performance is a perfect example of what makes Tiny Desk Concerts and the band itself so special.

You can hear the lead single from True Sadness, "Ain't No Man," on this week's episode of All Songs Considered.
