Three people died and two were hospitalized following a crash in Wilkes County.

WXII reports that one of the deceased is a deputy with the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Department.

The television station, citing the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, reports that the incident occurred Friday around 7 p.m. on Red White and Blue Road near Ruth Linny Road.

Troopers said a Jeep Liberty crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a Nissan Altima.

The driver of the Jeep, Randy Johnson, 62, died at the scene. Vickie Key, 72, a passenger in the Nissan, also died at the scene.

The driver of the Nissan was taken to a hospital, where he died. WXII has identified him as Jonathan Laws, 34, a Wilkes County deputy. 

Two other passengers were taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries not considered life-threatening.
