Longtime state Senator Stan Bingham (R-33rd) of Davidson County has announced he will not seek re-election, and he already has a successor in mind.

Bingham, who is in his eighth term, is among the first in the General Assembly to announce that he'll retire from the legislature after this term.

He tells The Dispatch of Lexington that he supports former Davidson County Commissioner and business owner Cathy Dunn to replace him. Bingham, who is 69, says he wants to spend more time with his family and grandchildren.

Bingham was first being elected in 2000 and has survived primary challenges in the last two elections. He will finish out the current term, which ends in December, 2016.

His district serves Davidson and Montgomery counties.
