U.S. Representative Virginia Foxx of Watauga County is seeking her ninth term in office, facing two challengers as she runs in a revamped 5th District that no longer includes Forsyth County.

Incumbent Virginia Foxx is widely expected to retain her seat come November. This comes despite changes to the state's fifth congressional district which now stretches from Ashe to Gaston County, encompassing parts of both the northern and southern border of the state.

Foxx, a former schoolteacher and state senator, has maintained a firm grasp on the seat since she first took office in 2005.

Democratic challenger David Wilson Brown is a familiar name to many in the area. Two years ago he challenged — but fell short of defeating — Republican Congressman Patrick McHenry in the former 10th congressional district, which has also been redrawn.

The ballot will also include Air Force veteran and local postmaster Jeff Gregory running as the Constitution Party candidate.
