The Aycock Middle School is looking to trade in its current name, which honors a segregationist governor.

The News & Record of Greensboro reports members of the county's education board are asking the public for feedback on changing the name to Swann Middle School.

Charles Aycock was an early 20th-century North Carolina governor, education champion and an ardent segregationist. Melvin Swann was a shepherd of desegregation in the Greensboro City Schools system. He died in June at the age of 80.

At its meeting Thursday, the board agreed to a 30-day comment period on the name change.

The board will vote again after 30 days on a motion to make it final.
