Lee Descendant Resigns As Church Pastor Over MTV Statement

A descendant of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee is stepping down as pastor of a Triad church after negative reactions to his comments supporting racial justice activists on an MTV broadcast.

The Rev. Robert W. Lee IV issued a statement that he's resigning from Bethany United Church of Christ in Winston-Salem. He's a distant nephew of the Confederate general.

He said that some members of the church were uncomfortable with his remarks praising the Black Lives Matter movement during the Aug. 27 MTV Video Music Awards.

Lee said he resigned after the church decided to vote on his tenure.

GOP Chairman Condemns Mayoral Candidate's Reference To Race

The chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party has condemned a social media post by a mayoral candidate that listed her skin color among her qualifications.

Kimberley Barnette is one of three candidates in next week's mayoral primary in Charlotte. On her Facebook page, Barnette urged readers to vote for her, calling herself "REPUBLICAN & SMART, WHITE, TRADITIONAL." The post was soon taken down.

Chairman Robin Hayes said Tuesday any suggestion a candidate is more or less qualified based on skin color alone "is offensive to North Carolina Republicans." Hayes added "this type of suggestion has no place in our public discourse."

Court Restores Man's Lawsuit Against Cheating Wife's Lover

A jilted husband's lawsuit against a doctor accused of stealing his wife's love can proceed, thanks to an appeals court ruling in Forsyth County that lets people sue their spouse's lover and collect damages.

The state Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday that a trial court was wrong to throw out Marc Malecek's lawsuit due to concerns about constitutional protections of free speech and free expression. The decision resurrects the case he filed over what he said was his wife's affair with a physician at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center where she works as a nurse.

North Carolina is one of about a half-dozen states that allow lawsuits accusing a cheating spouse's lover of alienation of affection and criminal conversation.

North Carolina Moves To Block Chemical Discharges From River

North Carolina officials are acting to stop a chemical company from discharging compounds with unknown health risks into a river supplying hundreds of thousands of people with drinking water.

The state environmental agency said Tuesday it's acting to suspend a key permit allowing operation of the Chemours Co. plant near Fayetteville that employs nearly 1,000 workers. The Wilmington, Delaware-based company can't release any wastewater into the Cape Fear River without the permit.

Remapping Means NC Rep. Ford Will Run For The Senate

A North Carolina House member drawn into the same district as a Republican colleague during the latest remapping says he'll run instead for the Senate next year.

Rep. Carl Ford of Rowan County announced Tuesday he would seek the seat in the redrawn 33rd Senate District, where no senator currently lives.

Ford and Rep. Larry Pittman of Cabarrus County live in the proposed 83rd House District and otherwise could face each other in a primary.
