North Carolina Judges Toss Districts Drawn For GOP Advantage

A North Carolina trial court has rejected state legislative district maps, saying lawmakers took extreme advantage from drawing districts to help elect a maximum number of Republicans.

The three-judge panel of state judges ruled Tuesday that courts can step in to decide when partisan advantage goes so far it diminishes democracy.

Republicans argued there's no clear way for judges to know what kinds of redistricting are unacceptable. Democrats and their allies said the districts were so gerrymandered they unconstitutionally insulated politicians from changing voting behavior.

Common Cause and other plaintiffs asked the court to order half the House districts and 21 of 50 Senate maps redrawn quickly.

NC Medicaid Overhaul Schedule Altered By Budget Impasse

The schedule to shift most of North Carolina's Medicaid population to managed care is adjusting because of the state budget stalemate.

The Department of Health and Human Services announced Tuesday that managed care coverage won't begin in 27 counties on Nov. 1 as previously announced. Now it will go online statewide on Feb. 1, when enrollment in the other 73 counties will also begin.

Weather-Tested Residents Brace For Dorian On Southeast Coast

Weather-tested residents along the coasts of Georgia and the Carolinas are using their past experience with intense storms to guide them as they safeguard their homes and decide whether to heed evacuation orders.

Dorian weakened to a Category 2 hurricane Tuesday after slamming into the Bahamas as a terrifying Category 5 storm with 185 mph winds.

The threat of a direct hit on Florida has all but evaporated, but Dorian was expected to pass dangerously close to Georgia and South Carolina — and perhaps strike North Carolina — on Thursday or Friday.

Atlanta Motor Speedway and the Atlanta Braves are offering free services to residents from mandatory evacuation areas throughout Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina.

Airbnbs in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas are also extending a helping hand by offering free housing to evacuees.

Health Department Officials Suggest Discontinuing Vaping, Cite New Possible Risks

The Centers for Disease Control and Protection and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services are warning people on the dangers of e-cigarettes. This comes after recent reports of severe lung diseases after vaping.

At least three patients in North Carolina were hospitalized this summer after using an e-cigarette or vaping type devices. And health officials are now saying if you vape, stop.

Symptoms may be similar to pneumonia. Including shortness of breath, cough, nausea, and vomiting. The severity varies, and some people have wound up in the intensive care unit.

Police Capture Suspect In North Carolina Murder Case

Police in North Carolina say a suspect has been arrested in the death of the man who was convicted in the 2002 death of NBA star Chris Paul's grandfather.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports 31-year-old Joseph Anthony Hannah was taken into custody by High Point police on Tuesday after a foot chase.

Hannah is accused in the stabbing death of 31-year-old Dorrell Queshane Brayboy, who served 12½ years in prison after he was convicted of second-degree murder in the death of Nathaniel Jones. Police have not released any other details about the incident, including a possible motive.

Assessment Team To Gauge Safety Of River In North Carolina

An assessment team is taking a look at a river in North Carolina to see if boaters, rafters, and fishermen can use it again.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports a technical team launched boats on the Nantahala River on Tuesday to assess potential hazards and to lessen risks associated with landslides.

One week ago, the U.S. Forest Service closed an 8-mile section of the river to boating due to debris.
