Early Voting Underway In North Carolina

In-person early voting in North Carolina begins Wednesday.

Early voting is also known as one-stop absentee voting. This year, it runs from October 17th to November 3rd, three days before Election Day.

For early voting, anyone can cast a ballot in-person in the county in which they are registered. On Election Day you'll have to go to your specific precinct, but for early voting, there are multiple locations.

Early voting also allows for same-day registration. Voters can register by filling out an application and showing proof of address.

There will be more than 300 early voting sites across the state. County-by-county locations and hours can be found on the state board of elections website.

Judges Rule North Carolina Elections Board Unconstitutional

A three-judge panel says changes made to North Carolina's elections board over the last year were unconstitutional, but said the board can remain in place through the November elections.

Tuesday's ruling agrees with Gov. Roy Cooper's argument that the Republican-led General Assembly went too far in limiting his authority to name the board.

However, a proposed amendment to the state constitution on the ballot would allow lawmakers to name board members. Cooper twice sued to keep it off the ballot. After it was rewritten to remove attempts to strip the governor of powers to appoint members of other boards and commissions, the lawsuit was thrown out.

Business 40 In Winston-Salem Will Close November 11th

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has announced a date when the planned shutdown of Business 40 in Winston-Salem will begin.

According to a department statement, the 1.2 mile section of Business 40 between Peters Creek Parkway and U.S. 52 will close on Sunday, November 11th at 8 a.m.

A number of downtown bridges will also be closed and replaced.

Even thought the reconstruction of Business 40 is slated to last up to two years, efforts are underway to open the road in early 2020.

Governor Signs Florence Emergency Spending

North Carolina's governor is moving fast to authorize legislation spending $400 million to quickly help people and communities reeling from Hurricane Florence and setting aside another $450 million for upcoming needs.

Gov. Roy Cooper's office said Tuesday he signed into law the legislation passed late Monday.

North Carolina Trooper Shot And Killed, Suspect In Custody

Authorities say a North Carolina state trooper has been shot and killed, and a suspect is in custody.

A North Carolina State Highway Patrol release says the trooper was shot while conducting a traffic stop near Whiteville around 12:15 a.m. Wednesday. He died at a local hospital.

Bladen County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Larry Guyton says the suspect was caught around 4 a.m. after authorities surrounded the woods near Fair Bluff, close to the South Carolina state line.

Blood, Urine Tests Of Chemical Plant Neighbors Find No GenX

State and federal health officials found industrial compounds in the bloodstreams of people living near a North Carolina chemical plant, just not the much-debated and little-studied one they sought.

North Carolina's health agency said Tuesday 30 people living around a Chemours Co. plant south of Fayetteville were tested, and none of them showed the chemical GenX in their blood or urine. Everyone had in their blood at least four of the 16 related chemicals tested.

Scientists don't know how much may be unsafe.
