Early Voting Sites Open In 9th District Primary For US House

Republican and unaffiliated voters can start casting early ballots in the North Carolina special congressional election prompted by findings of ballot fraud.

Early-voting sites are open Wednesday through May 10 in the 9th congressional district's eight counties. Six counties have just one early-voting site open on weekdays during regular business hours. Mecklenburg County has seven sites.

1 Killed, 1 Injured In Separate North Carolina Plane Crashes

One pilot is dead and a second pilot is hospitalized following separate plane crashes in North Carolina.

Statesville Regional Airport Manager John Ferguson says a plane based in Statesville crashed in Rowan County on Monday.

Pilot Guy Maher was killed in the crash. The Winston-Salem Journal reports Maher was a former pilot for Aircare Wake Forest Baptist Health.

In Onslow County, an experimental plane crashed nose down at Holly Ridge/Topsail Island Airport around 3 p.m. on Monday.

WITN-TV reports Robert Barrows of Fincastle, Virginia, was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Col. Chris Thomas of the Onslow County Sheriff's Office said Barrows had an apparent injury to his leg or foot.

Groups File Lawsuit Over Approval Of North Carolina Bridge

Local residents, hunters and wildlife enthusiasts have filed a lawsuit challenging approval by state and federal officials of a proposed new bridge on the North Carolina coast.

The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Raleigh.

A news release from the Southern Environmental Law Center on Tuesday says the $500 million Mid Currituck Bridge would lead to growth in undisturbed areas along the northern Outer Banks. The center's attorney says the Federal Highway Administration and the N.C. Department of Transportation have failed to consider less damaging and less expensive alternatives.

The groups also claim that NCDOT has shut the public out of the decision-making process.

Officials: 9 Inmates Injured In North Carolina Prison Riot

Officials say nine inmates were injured during a riot at a North Carolina prison.

The N.C. Department of Public Safety says the riot occurred around 2:15 p.m. on Monday at Piedmont Correctional Institution in Salisbury and involved inmates fighting each other.

Department spokesman John M.R. Bull says none of the prison staff was injured.

According to Bull, nine inmates were taken for outside medical attention.

North Carolina Museum Announces Birth Of 6 Red Wolf Pups

For the third straight year, a North Carolina museum is announcing the birth of red wolf pups.

The Museum of Life and Science in Durham says on its webpage that a litter of six red wolf pups was born on Monday. It's the fifth time in 26 years that red wolves at the museum gave birth.

A news release from the museum says the pups appear to be in good health and are inside the red wolf habitat at the Explore the Wild exhibit.

About 200 red wolves live in captive breeding programs. Nearly 35 live in the wild in eastern North Carolina, making them an endangered species.
