Bipartisan Bill Would Expand North Carolina ID Theft Laws

Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein and a key Republican legislator say expanded identity theft laws are needed in North Carolina to alert the public about increasing security breaches and to make it easier for them to protect themselves.

Stein and Rep. Jason Saine of Lincolnton announced Monday a bill would be filed during the General Assembly's work session in May that requires businesses to let Stein's office and affected consumers know of a breach within 15 days. Current law isn't specific on a time.

The public also would get more free credit reports, as well as credit monitoring if a company like Equifax gets hacked.

Coalition Runs Ads Against North Carolina Judicial Changes

Several groups opposed to Republican efforts at the North Carolina General Assembly to make fundamental changes to judicial selection are running commercials against them.

The groups created a "fair courts coalition" that began online ads Monday. A television commercial will follow in the Raleigh area Wednesday, when the legislature reconvenes. A spokesman for coalition member Progress North Carolina Action says the ad buy is at least $100,000 but wouldn't get more specific.

NC Officials Debate Definition Of 'Commercial Fisherman'

North Carolina officials are trying to figure how to describe commercial fishermen, who complain that anglers are getting licenses so they can catch more fish than is allowed.

The chairman of the North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission tells the Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, Virginia, that the evidence is in the numbers.

Chairman Sam Corbett says that in 2017, nearly 3,000 licensed fishermen sold seafood to dealers totaling nearly 60 million pounds worth $94 million. But about 4,000 others who bought commercial licenses didn't sell to a seafood dealer.

A committee will meet Thursday in Morehead City to discuss who should be allowed to get a commercial license.
