NC Court Hears Cases On Racism And Death Penalty

A defense attorney is asking North Carolina's highest court to weigh in on what he called hundreds of years of racial discrimination in jury selection. But an attorney representing the state says the decision facing the state Supreme Court is limited to whether the provisions of a repealed law still apply.

The state Supreme Court began hearing arguments Monday in the cases of six inmates who say they ended up on death row because of racism and that they were incorrectly returned to death row when a law designed to help them, called the Racial Justice Act, was repealed.

UNC Hospitals Accreditation Affected After Problems Found

A national accrediting agency has placed UNC Hospitals on "preliminary denial of accreditation status" after finding problems during a recent review.

UNC Health Care confirmed the decision by the Joint Commission in a statement Friday but didn't detail the problems. It said the status would remain in effect until another survey is completed.

The hospital system says it "has developed plans to address each area cited for improvement," and added that the plans have already been implemented.

The News & Observer cited an internal UNC System document identifying problems in areas including suicide prevention and medication management.

Over 20,000 AT&T Workers In The South Strike Over Weekend

More than 20,000 AT&T workers in nine Southern states went on strike over the weekend, saying that the telecommunications company isn't bargaining in good faith over a new contract.

The union, the Communications Workers of America, says AT&T isn't sending negotiators who have the authority to make decisions.

When asked if there will be service interruptions for customers, AT&T said that it's prepared for a strike. The workers who have walked off are technicians and customer service representatives for AT&T's "wireline" home and business internet and phone division, not its cellphone division.

Ex-Athletic Trainer Indicted On Child Pornography Charges

A federal prosecutor says a grand jury has filed a superseding indictment against a former athletic trainer intern who he says tried to entice young boys to send him sexually explicit images.

U.S. Attorney Andrew Murray said in a news release on Monday that the 21-count indictment was returned against 23-year-old Frank Darrell Cromwell of Boone. Officials say Cromwell met some of the victims through his Appalachian State University internship as an athletic trainer at Watauga High School.

North Carolina Woman Awarded $3.2M In Revenge Porn Case

A North Carolina woman has been awarded $3.2 million in a libel and revenge porn lawsuit against her ex-husband and his new girlfriend.

A jury on Monday sided with Elizabeth Ann Clark in her case against U.S. Army Maj. Adam Clark and Lt. Col. Kimberly Rae Barrett. The Fayetteville Observer reports this appears to be the first revenge porn lawsuit to reach a jury verdict in the state.

Elizabeth Clark says Adam Clark posted revealing photos of her online and spread lies, including that she had an eating disorder. He's also accused of stalking her; related misdemeanor charges are pending against him.
