Dorian Expected To Cause Flooding Along Carolinas Coast

As Hurricane Dorian slogs up the Carolinas coast, forecasters are predicting high storm surges and drenching rains that could trigger widespread flooding and unleash environmental hazards.

The National Weather Service on Wednesday issued a Hurricane Warning for the entire Atlantic coast from northern Georgia to southern Virginia, predicting a "potentially life threatening storm surge" up to 8 feet around the North Carolina-South Carolina line.

Meteorologists predicted Dorian's eye would skirt the coast, potentially making landfall before brushing past Cape Hatteras.

Following Ruling, NC Legislators Set Redistricting Meetings

North Carolina Republican legislative leaders have scheduled redistricting committee meetings following a ruling by state trial judges that struck down House and Senate maps for excessively favoring GOP candidates.

The meetings set for Monday appear to signal GOP leaders will comply with the judges' order to draw new boundaries for the 2020 elections, instead of filing an appeal. Meeting agendas hadn't been released as of Wednesday.

Senate leader Phil Berger said after the ruling his chamber would move forward adopting a "nonpartisan map." House Speaker Tim Moore's office had no comment.

Participatory Budgeting Debuts In Greensboro

Greensboro residents ages 14 and older will soon begin deciding how to spend $500,000 in city funds. And this week for the first time residents will be able to vote online.

It's called Participatory Budgeting, and it began with resident volunteers submitting ideas for capital improvement projects.

Project advocates spent months developing proposals that were then vetted and placed on the ballot.

In-person voting begins Friday at the North Carolina Folk Festival.

Winston-Salem police say a 15-year-old student has been charged after bringing a handgun to Mount Tabor High School.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports the student was carrying a .22 caliber revolver in his backpack Wednesday.

The police department's school resource unit located the gun with help from school officials.

Police say no threats were made to other students or school staff.

The student was charged with possession of a firearm on education property and possession of a firearm by a minor.

Grandfather Mountain Celebrates Museum Expansion

Grandfather Mountain supporters have broken ground on a new conservation campus.

The Wilson Center for Nature Discovery expands the current Nature Museum.

The Watauga Democrat reports that the project will add new features including more than a dozen interactive exhibits to teach people about the natural communities found on the mountain.

An additional 10,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor educational space is being added.

The project is expected to cost $5.5 million, and officials with the nonprofit say more than 80 percent of the money has already been raised.
