Cooper Issuing Paid Parental Leave Order

Gov. Roy Cooper is using the power of his pen again to promote policies his administration considers supportive of women in the workplace and family-friendly.

Cooper's office says the Democratic governor on Thursday will sign an executive order addressing paid parental leave. In recent months, Cooper signed orders addressing protections for pregnant state employees and the pay gap between female and male state workers.

Fantasy Sports Regulation Advances In North Carolina House

A repeat effort to regulate popular fantasy sports games in North Carolina has advanced through a House panel two years after a similar effort failed.

The House Commerce Committee voted on Wednesday for the measure, which would require companies that operate fantasy sports to register with the state and abide by some rules.

A 2017 bill failed to get enough support after social conservatives complained it would further legitimize gambling in the state. This year's measure also contains the creation of a new state Gaming Commission that would consolidate oversight of the lottery, bingo and boxing in addition to the fantasy games.

Proposed Greensboro Budget Includes First Property Tax Increase In Over A Decade

Greensboro residents haven't seen a property tax increase in more than a decade, but that could soon change.

The new budget proposed by Greensboro City Manager David Parrish calls for a 3-cent tax increase, to just over 66 cents per $100 property valuation.

That translates to roughly $45 more a year for the owner of a home valued at $150,000.

The News and Record reports this would be the first property tax boost in 11 years.

City council will hold a public hearing on the proposed budget at its June 4 meeting.

Mother Of Slain College Football Player Files Lawsuit

The mother of a North Carolina college football player who was shot and killed after attending a party is suing the school where the party took place, saying officials were negligent and had inadequate security.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports Jemel Dixon, the mother of Winston-Salem State University football player Najee Baker, filed a wrongful-death lawsuit in federal court. Wake Forest University is among the defendants.

Dixon's lawsuit says the events center where the party was held had experienced numerous problems requiring police intervention. It also said school officials ignored a report calling for university police to provide equal security at all student events and leaving event management to students.

The school declined comment, citing pending litigation.
