North Carolina Republicans Return For Session

State lawmakers could wrap up their extended session by the end of the month.

The GOP-led legislature returns from a week-and-a-half break still at loggerheads with the Democratic governor over key policies.

Also hanging in the balance is the state budget, which Cooper vetoed in June for lack of Medicaid expansion.

GOP leaders also want to override the veto of a bill requiring county sheriffs to recognize requests by U.S. immigration agents to hold jail inmates believed to be in the country illegally.

And lawmakers also have yet to reach agreement on bills tightening mail-in absentee balloting laws and offering loans to struggling rural hospitals.

Search For Small Plane Missing Near Raleigh Airport

A search for a small plane continues in a densely forested state park near Raleigh-Durham International Airport, where air traffic controllers lost contact with the aircraft as it prepared to land.

A statement posted on the airport's website Monday said a North Carolina highway patrol helicopter was scanning the park for heat signatures consistent with a crash landing.

Rescuers from 12 state and local agencies are searching in and around William B. Umstead State Park.

The Federal Aviation Administration radar lost track of the Piper PA32 at about 7:25 p.m. Sunday.  Air operations were halted for about 20 minutes as firefighting and rescue units rushed to the wooded area, but the plane could not be located.

Online Resource Helps Families Of Color Talk To Kids About Racism

Local experts have created a new program that helps families of color talk to their children about racism and discrimination.

It's called One Talk at a Time, and it's a collaborative effort by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Wake Forest University.

It provides parents with videos and prompts to help them start a dialogue with their kids.

One Talk at a Time offers specialized programs for Latinx American, Asian American, and African American families.

Annual North Carolina School Bus Safety Action Begins

State troopers will emphasize safety around school zones and buses this week during North Carolina's annual "Operation Stop Arm" enforcement effort.

The Highway Patrol along with the Department of Public Instruction and Wake County school representatives will participate in a Monday news conference at the North Carolina State Fair to talk about the initiative.

Troopers plan to aggressively enforce stop-arm and other school-related traffic violations this week. In previous years, troopers have ridden on buses and in unmarked patrol cars.

North Carolina bus drivers involved in annual one-day counting exercises routinely record more than 3,000 vehicles breaking stop-arm rules.

Ex-Director Of Historic School Charged With Embezzling $175k

Police have charged the former executive director of a Hillsborough school with embezzling nearly $175,000 from the Civil War-era site.

The Herald-Sun reports that Ronda Tucker was fired from the Burwell School in June.

Hillsborough Historic Commission Chairman Brooks Graebner said the school didn't put Tucker through the usual background check when she was first hired in 2016 because her job as a guide did not include financial responsibilities. Graebner said Tucker was given more responsibility over time.

The school was built in the 1800s. It now preserves the history of the town, the school and the enslaved and free people of color who worked there.
