After Referendum, North Carolina GOP Tries Voter ID Again

North Carolina Republican majorities at the state legislature have twice passed voter ID laws, only to have them blocked each time. Now GOP lawmakers are emboldened to approve another one before Democrats can stop their preferred plans next year.

The General Assembly returns to work Tuesday, three weeks after voters statewide approved a constitutional amendment requiring photo identification to vote in person. Atop the GOP agenda is passing a law carrying out that amendment.

Republicans lose their veto-proof control in January so, by acting now, longtime photo voter ID opponent Gov. Roy Cooper can't stop what they pass.

Congressmen Decry Detention Of Immigrant Who Left Church

Two North Carolina congressmen are slamming the Trump administration as "callous" and "cruel" after an immigrant who sought refuge from deportation in a church was arrested after arriving at an appointment with immigration officials.

Democratic Reps. David Price and G.K. Butterfield said Mexican national Samuel Oliver-Bruno appeared to have been entrapped by federal officials when he was detained Friday at a Raleigh-area immigration office.

The advocacy group Alerta Migratoria NC said Oliver-Bruno went to have his fingerprints taken so he could apply to stay in North Carolina with his wife and son. He spent 11 months in a Durham church to avoid immigration authorities.

NC Environmental Chief: Chemical Maker Must Change Its Ways

North Carolina's top environmental official hopes one of the country's largest chemical companies will change how it operates now that it has been hit with the largest penalty a polluter has had to pay the state.

North Carolina environmental secretary Michael Regan said Friday that Chemours Co. is agreeing to pay the state a $12 million penalty and sharply reduce air emissions of the nonstick compound known as GenX.

The deal announced late Wednesday requires Chemours to stop decades of emissions into the air and water of compounds the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency this month said appear dangerous even in small amounts.

FBI Highlights Kidnapped Teen's Shoes In Search For Leads

Authorities in North Carolina are asking the public to be on the lookout for shoes belonging to a missing 13-year-old girl who was kidnapped earlier this month.

The FBI said Saturday Hania Aguilar owned distinctive shoes that her kidnapper could have tried to get rid of. The shoes are white Adidas sneakers with colorful stitching on the back heel.

Aguilar was kidnapped Nov. 5 from a mobile home park. Relatives say the eighth-grader went outside to start a relative's SUV to prepare to leave for the school bus stop. Police say a man then forced her into an SUV and drove off.

Fedora Out As UNC Football Coach

Larry Fedora is out as head football coach of UNC.

He took over the program before the 2012 season as an investigation of improper benefits and academic misconduct was winding down. A one-year postseason ban and scholarship reductions followed. But Fedora was able to rebuild, highlighted by an 11-win season in 2015 that included an ACC division championship.

It's been a different story the past two years. The Tar Heels won just five games while losing 18. This weekend, they lost a lead to the N.C. State Wolfpack in Chapel Hill, ultimately losing in overtime in a match-up marred by a post-game brawl in the end zone.

The move to oust Fedora will cost UNC about $12 million owed on his contract that runs through the 2022 season.
