More Counting Puts Hunt Ahead In North Carolina House Race

The counting of more ballots in an extremely close North Carolina legislative race now has the daughter of a former governor leading a chairman of a powerful House committee.

Democrat Rachel Hunt is 64 votes ahead of Republican Rep. Bill Brawley after more absentee ballots received by Mecklenburg County were counted Friday. Brawley had a 52-vote lead after election night. Provisional and more absentee ballots will be counted this week.

Hunt and Brawley competed in one of this fall's most expensive and prominent legislative races. Hunt's father is four-term Gov. Jim Hunt. Brawley is a top leader on the House Finance Committee.

North Carolina Toddler Found Safe After Search

Police say that a North Carolina toddler whose abduction triggered an Amber Alert has been found and reunited with her mother.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department issued a news release Sunday saying they assisted the U.S. Marshals Service as marshals apprehended a suspect in the Gastonia abduction. The news release said the Gastonia girl was being reunited with her mother. Police say the suspect was arrested after a car crash in Charlotte.

Reward In Case Of Kidnapped North Carolina Teen Rises To $20K

A total reward of $20,000 is being offered in the case of a 13-year-old girl kidnapped from a North Carolina mobile home park.

Lumberton police announced Friday that Gov. Roy Cooper's office is offering $5,000 for information that leads to Hania Noelia Aguilar. The FBI is offering $15,000.

Relatives say the eighth-grader went outside last week to start a relative's SUV to prepare to leave for the bus stop. Police say a man then forced her into an SUV and drove off.

The FBI says the SUV was found in Lumberton Thursday, several miles from the mobile home park. Police Chief Michael McNeill asked nearby residents to check their property for anything unusual.

Officer Dies In Crash During Robbery Investigation

North Carolina authorities say one police officer died and another was injured in a crash during a robbery investigation.

A Greensboro Police Department news release Saturday said that the officers were attempting to locate the vehicle driven by the possible robbery suspect when the police vehicles crashed. The news release said no civilian cars were involved.

Two officers were taken to a hospital, where one died of injuries. The other officer's injuries weren't considered life-threatening.

Greensboro police identified the officer who died as 24-year-old Jared William Franks. A news release said he joined the department in 2016.

Triad Hospital Raises Minimum Wage To $12.50

A North Carolina hospital has announced plans to raise its minimum hourly wage to $12.50 an hour.

Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center said Friday the $1.50 increase is part of its goal to increase the living wage to at least $15 an hour over the next several years.

The not-for-profit system said 9 percent of its workforce, or about 1,460 employees, benefit from the increase that has gone into effect.
