Group Behind Winston-Salem Confederate Statue Wants It Back Up

A Confederate statue is no longer standing over the familiar downtown Winston-Salem corner it once overlooked. But the fight over its placement is not over.

City officials removed the monument earlier this month, describing it as a public nuisance that could incite violence.

Now the organization behind the statue is making a legal argument to put it back up. The Winston-Salem Journal reports that the United Daughters of the Confederacy say the city created a crisis around the statue to justify taking it down.

They want it back in the place it stood for more than 100 years. In court filings, they also ask that city attorney Angela Carmon to no longer have involvement in the case.

New Elections Overseers Selected For Bladen County

The North Carolina county at the heart of a ballot-collection scandal that forced a new congressional election is getting a clean slate of elections overseers.

The State Board of Elections picked three new members to Bladen County's elections board. They opted against picking a fourth member because the Democrats and Republicans refused to nominate additional candidates untouched by last year's election turmoil. The governor appoints the chair of the five-member board.

Protest, Residency Challenge In Sheriff's Race To Be Heard

An election protest in a still-unresolved North Carolina sheriff's race will be heard after all.

The State Board of Elections told the Columbus County elections board to conduct a hearing soon on allegations from Democratic Party official Gloria Smith. The Columbus board dismissed Smith's protest earlier because she checked the wrong box on a form.

The state board voted 3-2 on Thursday to also direct Columbus officials to examine Smith's allegation that Republican Jody Greene didn't meet candidate residency requirements.

Beasley Joins Other Democrats For Lieutenant Governor's Bid

A North Carolina House member is expanding the group of Democrats running for lieutenant governor.

Two-term Rep. Chaz Beasley of Charlotte announced he's seeking his party's nomination.

The 33-year-old finance attorney says his campaign will be built on working to ensure everyone can live up to their potential and "participate in our shared success" in the state. Beasley has spent time recently working on legislation addressing sexual assault and financial literacy.

Democrats already running include state Sen. Terry Van Duyn, former Sen. Cal Cunningham and attorney Bill Toole. Current GOP Lt. Gov. Dan Forest is planning to run for governor.

California Grower Recalls Avocados Over Possible Listeria

A Southern California company is voluntarily recalling whole avocados over possible listeria contamination.

Henry Avocado, a grower and distributor based near San Diego, said Saturday that the recall covers conventional and organic avocados grown and packed in California. The company says they were sold in bulk across California, Arizona, Florida, Wisconsin, North Carolina and New Hampshire.

There have been no reports of any illnesses associated with the avocados.
