Dorian Another Obstacle In North Carolina Congress Race

Hurricane Dorian has created new challenges for a North Carolina congressional election already getting scant attention.

Voters on Tuesday will choose a successor to the late Rep. Walter Jones Jr. in the eastern 3rd Congressional District.

But as Dorian scraped the coastline Thursday on its way toward the state, residents were likely to be thinking more about weather than politics.

Early in-person voting in the district was supposed to continue through the week, but counties shuttered voting sites or will do so Friday. Republican Greg Murphy and Democrat Allen Thomas are the contest's top candidates. Both have curtailed campaigning until the storm passes.

States, Politicians Back Gun-Maker In Sandy Hook Appeal

Ten states and nearly two dozen members of Congress are joining the National Rifle Association in supporting gun-maker Remington Arms as it fights a Connecticut court ruling involving liability for the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

Officials in the 10 conservative states, 22 House Republicans and the NRA are among groups that filed briefs with the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday and Wednesday. They urged justices to overturn the Connecticut decision, citing a much-debated 2005 federal law that shields gun-makers from liability, in most cases, when their products are used in crimes.

Remington, based in Madison, North Carolina, made the Bushmaster AR-15-style rifle used to kill 20 first-graders and six educators at the Newtown, Connecticut, school on Dec. 14, 2012.

Muslim Civil Rights Group To Hold Meetings In Raleigh, Greensboro

Officials with the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organizations will speak at a town hall meeting in North Carolina about its work to protect civil liberties.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations will hold the meeting Friday in Raleigh. Speakers include the organization's executive director, its national litigation director, and its advocacy director.

CAIR will hold a Know Your Rights workshop at the Islamic Academy in Greensboro on Saturday. Litigation director Lena Masri will discuss rights at work and school and in encounters with law enforcement. Materials will be available in Arabic, English, Farsi and other languages.

Man Arrested For Walking Through School Dressed As Deputy

Authorities have arrested a man who they say walked through a North Carolina elementary school dressed like a sheriff's deputy.

The Herald-Sun of Durham reports the Orange County Sheriff's Office says 40-year-old Christopher Lee Hill went to New Hope Elementary School in Chapel Hill with his girlfriend last week wearing tactical pants, a black polo shirt and a black vest, similar to what deputies wear on duty. Hill told two teachers he was providing volunteer security.

Hill, jailed under a $500,000 bail, was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

Part Of Blue Ridge Parkway Closed After Fatal Virginia Crash

Officials with the Blue Ridge Parkway say a 15-mile section is closed after a head-on collision killed a Virginia man.

Rangers were called on Labor Day about a head-on collision near milepost 132 near Roanoke, Virginia. According to officials, the caller reported that one vehicle left the road and went down an embankment while the second vehicle was on fire on the road.

The road remains closed between Milepost 121 to 136 as crews assess road damage that occurred as a result of the automobile fire. The accident is under investigation.
