North Carolina Delays Mandating Readable Election Ballots

North Carolina's elections board is deadlocked over whether to require that voting machines produce a paper printout that lets voters read and confirm their ballot.

The state's Board of Elections on Thursday decided to debate the issue again in three weeks. By then, it's likely a fifth member will be appointed to replace the chairman who resigned this week.

The board is deciding whether voting machines offered by three companies will be cleared for sale to the state's 100 counties for years to come. One-third of the counties are under pressure because a state law says they can't use their current touch-screen devices after this year.

Defendants Charged In 9th District Voting Irregularities Case To Appear In Court

Seven people connected to voting irregularities in Bladen County are expected to appear in court Monday. The charges are the result of an investigation that led to overturning the results of the Ninth District congressional race.

All seven defendants turned themselves in this week after a grand jury returned indictments on charges including conspiracy to obstruct justice and illegal possession of absentee ballots.

Those charged include Leslie McCrae Dowless, the former political operative who worked on behalf of Republican Mark Harris' campaign. He faces obstruction and perjury charges, among other counts.

Also charged is Lisa Britt, who worked for Dowless and testified during the state's hearing on the ballot irregularities. Her charges include voting as a felon.

High Point Mayor Proposes Separation From Guilford Schools

The mayor of High Point has suggested moving the city's schools out of the Guilford County Schools system.

During his State of the City Address on Tuesday, Mayor Joe Wagner proposed forming a committee to study the pros and cons of remaining under the Guilford school system umbrella.

Wagner tells The News and Record he's heard from residents wondering if the quality of the schools has improved since a merger with the Guilford system in 1993.

Wagner believes there is a public perception that High Point schools are inadequate, which in turn hurts economic development and property values.

He says a study could at least shine a light on how the schools are doing, and provide a springboard to discuss options.

2020 GOP Convention Logo Has Star-Studded Elephant, Crown

The logo for the 2020 Republican National Convention in Charlotte features a star-studded red elephant standing before a navy crown.

The August convention may not be a coronation, but it's where President Donald Trump is all but certain to be nominated for a second term.

The GOP on Thursday released the elephant and crown logo, which features the symbols of the Republican Party and North Carolina's most populated city.

RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel says "the convention logo reflects both the energy of this vibrant city and traditions of the Republican Party."

Judge Files Order Against Lawyer With Ties To Southern Group

An attorney who previously led the North Carolina chapter of a group that advocates for Southern secession has been ordered not to handle clients' money.

A Wake County judge filed an order that prohibits Harold Ray Crews of Walkertown from accepting or disbursing client funds. The order signed Monday says the North Carolina State Bar received information that Crews had mishandled money entrusted to him.

It also says that Crews wants to cooperate and won't appeal the order.

As recently as 2017, Crews was chairman of the state chapter of the Alabama-based League of the South, which advocates for Southern secession.
