Board Vote Could Alter Health Insurance For State Workers

State employees could lose an option to their health insurance and see costs rise under changes to be considered by the North Carolina State Health Plan board of trustees.

WRAL-TV reports that executives who run the health plan have recommended to the trustees that they consider eliminating coverage for spouses, meaning they would likely have to seek coverage through the Affordable Care Act.

The board is scheduled to vote on Friday. Although the proposed changes wouldn't take effect next year, board members could vote to have their staff work on putting those changes in place by 2018.

Chuck Stone, director of operations for the State Employees Association of North Carolina, said the changes would make the state's health plan the worst in the nation.

Brody To Run For North Carolina National Republican Post

A Union County state representative says he's running this spring to become one of North Carolina's members on the Republican National Committee.

Rep. Mark Brody announced Tuesday his candidacy for RNC committeeman at the state party convention in May. The party chooses a committeeman and committeewoman every four years. Current members are Salisbury physician Ada Fisher and state Rep. David Lewis of Dunn.

Brody says he'll take a firm stand to uphold conservative values if elected and won't back down to political pressures if elected.

Some GOP activists have criticized Lewis in recent months for legislative actions related to the voter identification law and campaign finance changes. But the party's executive committee members last month stopped an effort by some requesting impeachment proceedings begin against Lewis.

Seizure Of 696 Animals In NC Sets ASPCA Record

The almost 700 animals seized from a no-kill shelter in North Carolina sets a record for the ASPCA, the group that's now caring for the pets.

ASPCA spokeswoman Kelly Krause said Tuesday the organization has rescued 696 animals from The Haven-Friends for Life in Hoke County since last week. The previous record for companion animals rescued from one location was 692 cats rescued in 2012 in Lee, Florida.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is caring for the animals at two warehouses about an hour southwest of Raleigh.

Stephen Joseph and Linden Spear managed The Haven and appeared in court last week on animal cruelty charges. A family friend said last week that the Spears dedicated their lives to caring for the animals.

Police: 13-Year-Old Girl Whose Body Was Found In North Carolina Was Stabbed To Death

Authorities say a Blacksburg, Virginia teenager — Nicole Madison Lovell — was stabbed to death the same day she left her home out a bedroom window last week. Her body was found over the weekend in North Carolina.

Police documents show that David Eisenhauer, a Virginia Tech student accused of kidnapping and killing the 13-year-old girl, had told officers who arrested him Saturday that he believes "the truth" will set him free.

Authorities revealed a few facts about their investigation Tuesday as they tried to reconstruct exactly what happened after the seventh-grader was reported missing Wednesday. The body of the Blacksburg, Virginia, teen was found Saturday after a four-day search just across the state line in North Carolina.

NASCAR Champion Tony Stewart Hospitalized With Back Injury

Three-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart has been hospitalized with a back injury and Stewart-Haas Racing is unsure of the extent of his injuries.

A team spokesman says that Stewart was injured in a non-racing accident on Sunday. He is being evaluated in an undisclosed hospital and able to move all extremities.

No further information was given and spokesman Mike Arning indicated Stewart's condition will not be updated again until Thursday.

Stewart is retiring at the end of this NASCAR season. He turns 45 in May and missed a third of the 2013 season with a broken leg he sustained in a sprint car accident.
