Federal, State Officials Set To Hear Concerns Over Coal Ash

State officials have scheduled a hearing in Walnut Cove to hear the community's concerns over coal ash.

The North Carolina Advisory Committee is holding the all-day hearing on Thursday at the Walnut Cove Public Library in Stokes County.

Local residents are especially concerned about the nearby Duke Energy plant at Belews Creek, which was cited by the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources in 2014 following a spill at one of the utility's coal ash dumps that coated 70 miles of the Dan River in toxic sludge.

Ally Financial has announced it is acquiring a Florida online broker adding about 100 jobs to its workforce in Charlotte.

The Charlotte Observer reports the parent company of Ally Bank announced on Tuesday that it is purchasing the TradeKing Group based in Fort Lauderdale for $275 million.

Duke Protesters Reject Offer By University's President

Duke University students participating in a sit-in have rejected a proposed initiative by the university to raise the minimum wage for its workers and hire an outside expert to review employee grievance procedures.

Duke President Richard Brodhead sent a letter to the campus community Wednesday, saying the university would take steps to improve school working conditions, including beginning to raise Duke's minimum wage to $12.

Within 30 minutes, protesting students said the concessions weren't enough.

Man Accused Of Assault At Trump Rally Appears In NC Court

The white Donald Trump supporter accused of punching a black man being escorted from a Trump rally in Fayetteville by sheriff's deputies has had his case continued.

John Franklin McGraw, 78, briefly appeared in a Cumberland County courtroom to answer to charges stemming from the incident. He is charged with assault and disorderly conduct.

Both the defense and the prosecution agreed to the case being continued until July 13.
