A bipartisan group is forming to try and break the impasse over House Bill 2. The group is looking to find a compromise over the controversial bill.

The idea grew out of discussions over how to negotiate a way out of a situation that has resulted in economic losses, celebrity boycotts and dueling lawsuits.

Former state budget director Art Pope will lead the group with former Democratic Lt. Governor Dennis Wicker. Former Republican Governor Jim Martin would be the honorary co-chair.

Pope, who is a major door to the Republican Party, told the News and Observer he has a growing confidence that a compromise could be reached on the bill, which, among other things, nullified a Charlotte ordinance extending protections to transgender individuals.

Pope is organizing the group with John Hood, the president of Pope's family foundation. They're looking at a core group of 16 members who would represent local governments and people on various sides of the issue.
