Guilford County voters rejected the quarter-cent sales tax increase in yesterday's election. The vote was not close – it was 57 percent against and only 43  percent supporting the referendum.

Proponents of the referendum hoped to see the monies used to both retain teachers and to make needed safety and maintenance repairs to the school buildings in the county. According to the News and Record of Greensboro, the Guilford County Board of Commissioners agreed in June to let voters decide on raising the sales tax to generate additional funds for Guilford County Schools.
