Guilford County voters head to the polls for the municipal primary Tuesday with contested seats at the top of the ballot.

In Greensboro, Mayor Nancy Vaughan is seeking a third term after a tenure that found her frequently at loggerheads with the state legislature - including an unrequested move by lawmakers to change the city's political districts.

Vaughan faces two challengers making their first run for office. John Brown is a Greensboro businessman, and Diane Moffett is senior pastor at St. James Presbyterian Church.

The two candidates with the most votes will face off in the Nov. 7 general election. The winner will serve a four-year term, a change for the seat which had previously been for two.

In High Point, Mayor Bill Bencini's decision not to run for a second term means a change not just at the top, but on the city council as well.

That's because two sitting council members have filed for the office and will not be seeking to hold their current seats.

Jim Davis of Ward 5 served as interim mayor after Bernita Sims resigned from the post in 2014. He's joined on the ballot by fellow councilman Jay Wagner of Ward 4.

The third candidate in the race is also known to local voters. Bruce Davis previously served as a Guilford County commissioner.
