Greensboro's State of Downtown presentation on Thursday showed the area is thriving despite some challenges that have continued to persist since the COVID-19 pandemic.

More than 9 million people visited downtown in 2024. That's according to Downtown Greensboro, Inc., a nonprofit focused on investment and activity in the area.

The population in this part of the city saw an increase from around 2,700 residents in 2010 to about 3,800 last year. The number of downtown employees has grown as well.

DGI President Zack Matheny, who's also a city councilmember, says on average, people are spending two and a half hours downtown, which contributes to economic growth.

"You're eating, you're strolling, you're shopping," he says. "So these numbers are significant when we're going back to business recruitment."

According to the presentation, construction costs and interest rates slowing projects down continue to be challenges.

DGI is currently working on a 10-year strategic plan to build on the growth being seen in the area.
