A new chapter will begin for Aycock Middle School in the next school year. Last month, the Guilford County Board of Education voted to rename it.

The call for change came after some community members raised concerns over its history. The school is named for Charles B. Aycock, a former North Carolina governor who was an advocate for education, but also supported white supremacy.

A majority of people who responded to a school board survey opposed changing the name, but the overall survey response was low.

Now officials want the public's input before renaming it. Two forums are scheduled for 7 p.m. on October 18 and October 24 at Aycock Middle School.

Some higher education institutions, including UNC Greensboro and Duke University have also removed Aycock's name from buildings.

Guilford County Schools says the submission period for new names is open until Nov. 1.
