Former Mayor Chosen To Fill Boone Council Vacancy
The Boone town council moved to fill a vacancy on the board last week. And because a council member left her seat early, it changes the look of the local November ballot.
Jennifer Pena announced in May that she was leaving the Boone council because she’s moving out of town with her family.
Last week, the council unanimously chose Loretta Clawson to fill the vacancy. The Watuaga Democrat reports that the council cited Clawson’s experience when selecting her to replace Pena.
Clawson has a combined 16 years in the town government, including stints on the council and as mayor. She decided not to seek re-election in 2013.
More than two years remained on Pena’s term. But because she left so early, the seat now comes up for election this fall. That means Boone voters will vote for four council members instead of just the three that were up for election before Pena’s departure.
