The Davie County Board of Education swore in its new superintendent Tuesday morning.
Heath Belcher took the oath of office with his wife and daughter by his side.
Belcher has worked in public education in North Carolina for more than 20 years. Most recently, he served as associate superintendent of curriculum, instruction and innovation for Lincoln County Schools, though he got his start as a middle school teacher.
"I would like to express my gratitude to the Board for the trust they have placed in my family and me to be part of the Davie County Schools community," he said. "I feel incredibly blessed to be part of a supportive and dedicated school community that is committed to providing an exceptional education for our children.”
Belcher was chosen from a pool of 28 candidates. Davie County School Board Chair Dub Potts says his appointment was a unanimous decision.
“Seven different people think seven different ways," Potts said. "But when I started around the table … we went around and all seven people shared their number one candidate as Dr. Belcher.”
Belcher replaces Jeff Wallace, who served as the district’s superintendent for nearly six years before retiring May 1.
