The city of Greensboro is looking for new leadership at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex, which encompasses 12 venues including the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts.

City Manager Taiwo Jaiyeoba told city council Tuesday the complex has become too large for one person to manage. Jaiyeoba praised the current managing director, Matt Brown.

He said Greensboro is one of the only cities in the state to operate its venues this way, and it's time for a change.

"Managing this has become a little bit complex, obviously for one person," he said. "It's not sustainable and it's not even the best practice."

The Greensboro Coliseum Complex held 1,334 events during the 2022-2023 fiscal year. It currently employs more than 100 people full-time.

Jaiyeoba said the city will accept proposals from private companies until Oct. 6. Interviews will begin on Oct. 16.

In other business, city council voted seven to two to adopt an ordinance that eliminates plastic bags and vacuum leaf collection. Council members Zack Matheny and Hugh Holston voted against the change.

Residents will be provided a waste bin for leaf collection. They can purchase a second bin or use biodegradable paper bags for additional yard waste.

Council member Marikay Abuzuaiter said the new method will save taxpayers' money.

"This is going to make Greensboro much cleaner and much more environmentally safe," she said.

Millions have been spent on workers' comp claims by employees who were injured on the job, she said. The new method will pick up leaves and yard waste weekly, Abuzuaiter said.

Plastic bags will not be allowed for yard waste beginning on March 1. The ordinance will go into effect next fall.
