Police in Winston-Salem have arrested three teenagers in the death of a 5-year-old boy who was shot during a drive-by shooting on Cole Road Saturday evening.

According to a police report, the boy was struck in the head by a bullet that traveled into his apartment from a moving vehicle at approximately 5:20 p.m. Saturday.

The boy died after being transported by ambulance to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Police arrested 17-year-old Oscar Mendez-Rodriguez of Winston-Salem, along with two juveniles ages 14 and 15. Witnesses told investigators that several males were randomly firing handguns from a vehicle.

A .38 pistol and a Silver Nissan Sentra were seized.

Lt. Gregory Van Dorn says the shooting is believed to be a random act of violence, but it remains unclear if the incident is gang-related.

Police say three apartments in the complex were struck by gunfire, but no one else was injured.
