Caterpillar Inc. has announced it plans to cut up to 5000 jobs by the end of 2016. The news leaves a cloud hanging over the future of a manufacturing plant in Winton-Salem.

Caterpillar says that most of the jobs being eliminated are salaried and management positions.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports the company is considering closing more than 20 manufacturing plants around the world.

A spokesperson could not provide any details on which outlets would be affected.

Caterpillar operates an axle-manufacturing plant in Winston-Salem, which employs over 300 full-time workers.

Gayle Anderson, president of the Winston-Salem Chamber of  Commerce, says she doesn't yet know how North Carolina will be impacted.
